Said to symbolise the past, the present and the future; a bespoke trilogy ring can be a romantic and meaningful choice of design for an engagement ring. While historically the trio of stones would be diamonds, nowadays anything goes and it’s not uncommon to pair a diamond centre stone with coloured gemstones or have an eye catching coloured main stone flanked by diamonds. Our galleries of bespoke rings are rich with inspiration.
The concept of the trilogy ring dates back to Ancient Egypt where a trio of stones on jewellery represented the three phases of the sun – rising, noon and setting – or alternatively three stages of life – birth, life and death. The term ‘trilogy’ is derived from the Greek ‘tri’ (‘three times) and ‘logia’ (‘story’) – the Grecians gifted trilogy design rings as tokens of love and affection.
The Victorians were the first western era to popularise trilogy rings, this was partly due to new diamond discoveries in South Africa in the late 1800s. Multiple diamonds indicated a degree of wealth and the symbolism of the design made the trilogy a popular choice for an engagement ring. It was common practice for the centre stone to be larger to represent the present while smaller side stones portrayed the past and future. Some believe the trilogy has a spiritual meaning with the three representing ‘mind, body and spirit’. Whatever your take on its meaning, a trilogy design ring is a truly timeless and unique piece.
Tradition suggests a combination of three diamonds, however, a mix of coloured diamonds, gemstones and a variety of metals and settings make the possibilities endless as you go through the journey of designing your bespoke engagement ring with Blair and Sheridan. The versatility of design as well as the different interpretations of the idea of the trilogy make this type of ring perfect for an engagement, an anniversary or to mark a special occasion.
Much like any other diamond ring or fine jewellery you can keep the sparkle in your trilogy ring by following our simple care guide. While certain gemstones and pearls require periodic specialist care, generally speaking you can undertake easy cleaning at home without the use of specialist chemicals and treatments.
Despite having been around for centuries, trilogy rings have found a renewed popularity in recent years. Brought to the fore in the late 20th century by high profile figures such as Grace Kelly and Princess Diana, other celebrities that have donned trilogy engagement rings include Nicole Kidman, Vogue Williams, Jennifer Lopez, Meghan Markle and Nicky Hilton.
